ICE in NYC: Immigration, Policy, and Community Perspectives

Eric Adams started destroying the city’s sanctuary status. One third of the Bronxites, 483,000 people, were born outside the United States. New York City has been a sanctuary city since 1989, where “all residents, regardless of status, have access to services without fear of deportation.”

Sanctuary cities are places that aim to protect undocumented immigrants by not helping them to not be deported or detained. This policy is created to bring trust between immigrants and law enforcement, so that they can go to them in case of any trouble without any fear. The sanctuary city policy is better for all members of our community, because this policy increases public safety as well as strengthening community trust.

Currently, Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) is permitted to enter New York government buildings to arrest any undocumented person. Instead, we should be supporting immigrant families and educating their rights during any encounter with ICE.

Eric Adams, who is the Mayor of New York City, agreed to help Donald Trump deport immigrants in New York City, just so that he could avoid being charged for bribery and fraud. Trump directed the U.S attorney of Manhattan to drop all charges against Eric Adams in exchange for helping with mass deportations.

This topic affects all people, not just undocumented immigrants. Many immigrants live in fear, which can lead to mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, and stress. This turn of events is also causing a lot of undocumented students to drop out of school, since ICE officers now have access to enter school buildings even though on average, 35.5 fewer crimes are committed per 10,000 people in counties with sanctuary policies compared to those that do not.”

When two students were asked about how they feel about this topic, one said “it’s the worst thing that has happened in this country.  The other, however, said she “likes it because immigrants are killing people and this keeps us safe and most people also come into the country, get a job, and protect their family, and all these chances are taken away when they get deported.”

I think we should all come together to protect people who immigrated and collaborate together to keep them safe.  People are misinformed about undocumented immigrants by making them look like danger or threats to the country.
