Juniors and Sophomores traveled from Community School for Social Justice to Virginia State University and Hampton University, both in Virginia on Wednesday, March 26,2025. New York Edge team and lower division teachers nominated these students to go on the trip. Touring Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) gave students a chance to see if these colleges can be a good fit for them.
Virginia State University is a public HBCU. Virginia State offers upwards of 50 degrees and it has both modern facilities and historic buildings. Over 150 organizations and clubs are available for students. There is a strong focus on community service and engagement. There is also a diverse student body, not just African Americans. The school offers plenty of support services for students. Virginia State is ranked among the top HBCUs.
Hampton University is a private HBCU. Hampton also offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. Its online presence is strong and can be a good source for students. The university has a range of facilities. Hampton University’s athletics teams, also known as the Pirates, compete in the NCAA Division 1. Hampton is a reputable institution with a strong focus on academics, research, and community engagement.
